DAVO-Neuwahlen: Benjamin Schütze in den Vorstand gewählt
Auf der Jahreskonferenz der German Middle East Studies Association (DAVO) wurde Benjamin Schütze für vier Jahre zum Schatzmeister des DAVO-Vorstands gewählt. Der neue Vorstand möchte die DAVO zu einem Ort für kritische, interdisziplinäre, internationale und engagierte Wissenschaft machen. Darüber hinaus wollen die neuen Vorstandsmitglieder ein tieferes Verständnis für die Region fördern, koloniale und orientalistische Strukturen überwinden und klar gegen Rassismus, Unterdrückung und Angriffe auf die akademische Freiheit Stellung beziehen.
Workshop „Energieimperialismus und soziale Bewegungen im Nahen Osten und Nordafrika“
Vom 4. bis 6. Juni organisierte die Emmy Noether-Gruppe einen internationalen Workshop über die Zusammenhänge zwischen Israels anhaltendem genozidalen Krieg gegen Palästina und dem durch den fossilen Kapitalismus verursachten Klimawandel. Die Zerstörung des Gazastreifens seit dem 7. Oktober 2023 stellt sowohl eine humanitäre Krise als auch eine Umweltkatastrophe dar. So treibt auch die globale Industrie für fossile Brennstoffe sowohl den globalen Klimawandel voran als auch die westliche Unterstützung für die Zerstörung Palästinas.

In the summer term 2025, Benjamin Schuetze, Charlotte Mueller, Philipp Wagner and Elia El Khazen teach a seminar at the University of Freiburg on energy politics in the MENA region.
Teach in and Open Letter: Germany Must stop supporting the annihilation of Palestinians
Together with other academics and activists, Benjamin Schuetze initiated an open letter to the federal government of Germany receiving over 4600 signatures and participated in a teach-in engaging in a critical discussion on the letter’s key points and providing insights into broader political, social, and economic contexts.

During this workshop participants discussed environmental and energy politics in the MENA and beyond, with a particular focus on questions of race, finance and green tech.
